Banned Books Week!

Freadom14Poster_11x17_2014It’s a busy week for books.

Censorship is a tricky issue. On the one hand, we have our personal standards about what is and is not ok to read, for ourselves as adults and for the children in our lives for whom we are responsible. On the other hand, why should someone else’s personal standards dictate what I read? Last year, we had a long discussion on the blog about the issue, so I won’t belabor the point this year. It’s enough to say: I am in favor of standards and involved parents, and completely against censorship.

Here is a fantastic article by Sherman Alexie talking about the presence of rough things in kid’s lit.

And here is something interesting about one teacher defending assigning The Handmaid’s Tale.

  1. By a happy coincidence, the novel I’m reading for my exams this week (The Land of Spices by Kate O’Brien) was banned for a while. 🙂
